Seen it multiple times: Love Canal, the Cuyahoga River, the Great Lakes, Cancer Ally and Lake Charles in Louisiana. Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. It won’t change, so long as there is a profit motive, the corporate interests will simply write a check so government turns a blind eye until it’s too late.

It needed help then too. In the 80's Imperial Beach's slogan was " where the debris meets the sea".

This is a complex international problem that has been going on for decades. US-owned corporations operating in Mexico are contributing to the industrial contamination that crosses the border and the US-managed International Treatment Plant in San Diego County-meant to protect US residents-has faced years of deferred maintenance due to neglect and lack of funding. Mexico has already broken ground on repairing their wastewater treatment plant here, while our federal government has yet to prioritize this issue and address one of the most egregious public health and environmental justice emergencies in the United States.

@@surfriderfoundation Did the afore mentioned US-owned corporations establish operations in Mexico after (or as a result of) NAFTA?

Surfrider has done very little to help this, the largest pollution problem facing surfers, community, and ocean anywhere in the US for over 50 years…

Now I won't have to say it I will just reiterate it I'm sorry I got this alert on Google and they showed a picture of a giant wave.. there is no such way and nothing to do with Tijuana Slough except for Jibber Jabber. And this guy babbling about nothing that was promoted on the thumbnail. B*******!

Check out San Diego Coastkeepers they are taking action as well. My understanding is the solution is for the white house to spend $100m to turn back on the treatment plant that cleans the polluted river water before it reaches the pacific ocean

Surfrider got involved about 30 years ago after recognizing the extremely harmful impact transboundary pollution was having on our ocean, beaches, and access to coastal recreation. We began investing our volunteer and staff time, legal expertise, and financial resources towards addressing this issue. This has included: - Community engagement and coalition efforts like Tijuana River Action Month - Watchdogging and sharing information with the public - Testing water quality, which regularly yields results are deemed unsafe for ocean recreation by the state - Holding cleanups in the Tijuana River Valley, which we’ve had to cancel because our volunteers were getting sick - Working with community focus groups and the EPA to design the “Stakeholder Solution”, which helped to inform the current “Comprehensive Infrastructure Solution (CIS)” In 2018, after more than a decade of on-the-ground education and outreach without a firm solution in sight, Surfrider filed a citizen lawsuit under Clean Water Act section 505 against the IBWC to address the rampant and egregious water pollution. Additionally, Surfrider has worked jointly with many co-Plaintiffs in three related cases, which led to a strong global settlement with the IBWC in 2022. This settlement supports water quality and public health protections by improving monitoring, communications, reporting efforts, and advancing infrastructure improvements through the EPA-vetted CIS.

@@surfriderfoundation a settlement, really… That’s not acceptable given the level of pollution and health risks to humans and animal/marine life. Surfrider has failed us surfers in IB. I do appreciate the efforts but it’s far from settled as this is an extremely high violation of the Clean Water Act!
